Taiwan panel players established LED subsidiaries

AU Optronics (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO), the two major panel players in Taiwan all stepped their feet to LED production to complete the vertical integration of LED backlight modules.

AU Optronics (AUO) established Lextar in April 2008 to develop LEDs for LCD panel backlighting applications. Currently, the company has started trial run and is sheduled to commence operation in 2009. The company plans to purchase 5-10 units of metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) equipment in the first phase, according to the source.

Meanwhile, Chi Mei Lighting Technology (CMLT), CMO's LED subsidiary, is speeding up its development in LED backlighting market and is fully equipped in the beginning of August.

CMLT currently owns 10 metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) equipment units and has started production in small volumes and will expand its MOCVD equipment capacity to 20 units by the fourth quarter of this year and 46 units in 2009.

Montreal's growth driver in Optics & Photonics

Montreal International is scheduled to visit PIDA in first half of September for international cooperation & communication.

Montreal is conveniently positioned as a gateway between Europe and North America. As a global location, its strength is really anchored in Innovation, Quality, Delivery, and Capital and Human Infrastructure.

Montreal's Information and Communication Technology sector employs over 110,000 people in close to 2,700 organizations.Sales are reaching over $20 B, including over $5 B in export of goods and services. Over 200 foreign owned and controlled companies have also found a home in Montreal. Consistent through a number of rankings Montreal is considered to be one of the most favorable city in North America for software and hardware development.

Among all Canadian universities, Montreal ranks first in funds earmarked for research. With its high concentration of researchers in leading sectors such as multimedia, biotechnology, pharmacology and ITC, it has become an internationally acclaimed R&D hub recognized by the Quebec and Canadian governments which offer generous tax credits and tax holidays incentives.

Montreal International is currently working with a number of multinationals on developing a world-class, internationally recognized, industry-led InnovationCenter focused on optics-photonics built to support the country's competitive position in the high tech industry. And it is interested in meeting with companies involved hardware and software related to optics & photonics to discuss how this project can work in their plan. It is a $75M project with potential to create high quality, leading-edge research, employment and intellectual property.

OLED TV technology seminar on August 28

After Song unveiled its 11-inch OLED TV last December, Samsung SDI announced later that the company has developed a 31-inch AMOLED panel successfully. The act indicated that the OLED TV technology competition has rose up. The leading panel makers including Samsung, LG Display, Sony and CMEL all put a lot of efforts on AMOLED development. Taiwan-based CMEL said that the company expects to volume produce AMOLED TV panels in 2010 or 2011 on this June.

Aiming at the OLED market scale, technology trend, key material and the latest development in Japan, PIDA invites Mr. Mameno Kazunobu, the director of OLED System Division from Kodak Japan to give talks on the topics of "The key to OLED commercialization- low cost and large-size" at the OLED TV technology seminar. In addition, speakers from DisplaySearch, CMEL and Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) will talk on the topics on "Analysis of next generation display technology market and application trend", "AM OLED market and technology roadmap" and "The latest development on OLED material and phosphor".
