President Ma Ying-jeou Visited Huga Optotech, Streesing the Importance of Energy Saving

President Ma Ying-jeou visited Huga Optotech on September 21st , 2008 to hear the latest development of the LED industry.Located in Taichung Industrial Park for fab 1 and Central Taiwan Science Park for fab 3, Huga Optotech is a leading manufacturer of light emitting diode (LED) semiconductor device dedicated to LED chips and wafer production. Founded in 1998, HUGA commercialized its research on GaN product and rolled out its first LED chip in 2000, the time the global LED industry was about to take off.Now its monthly chip production capacity has increased from 50 million units to 600 million.

President Ma said, in response to the consciousness of environmental conservation, it's time to stress the importance of green energy & energy conservation. For instance, the lighting efficiency of LED helps save energy and create a new page in solid state lighting; solar energy provides clean and alternative choice to fossil fuel.

Furthermore, traditional fluorescent lamps with mercury pollute and as the world becomes greener we could see a surge in the demand for the altogether non-polluting LED lighting even although its relative cost is higher. But then again, he reminds, the life of an average LED light source is as much as ten times longer than that of current lighting options. The energy conservation characteristics of the LED technology will benefit the Taiwan society economically, and environmentally.

Vice President Vincent C. Siew Hosted the Groundbreaking Ceremony of New Factory of Millennium Communications

Millennium Communication Co., Ltd. Invited vice president Vincent C. Siew to host its groundbreaking ceremony of a new factory located in Hsin-Chu on September 26th.In his speech, vice president Vincent C. Siew specially referred to Dr. Peter Shih, the founder of the PIDA, as a foreseer of the prosperity of the Photonics Industry in Taiwan. He said when he was heading the Council for Economic Planning and Development, Dr. Shih advised him more than once the key role of Photonics industry played in the development of Taiwan's economy. Now, it has proved Shih's accurate insight.

As the price of petroleum rises, costs of solar cells drop, government environmental policy becomes stricter and technology improves the sooner this scenario become reality.Besides, In the wake of EU modifications to its energy infrastructure ¡V especially Germany which raised the ratio of renewable energy from the two main sources, solar cells and windpower, while hitting the brakes on more traditional sources like nuclear energy.

"We expect that in future solar cells will augment penetration of market in general usage," says Siew. It's an Industry sector that has already spawned major manufacturers like: Motech and E-Ton in Tainan, with more companies coming on line.He predicts, we could be seeing more popular use of solar power in a few years. "It's all on our doorstep ¡V and we're going to be at the forefront of the industry" here in Taiwan he beams.

Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency to promote The Solar Valley project in Limburg Province

Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency is scheduled to hold a press conference with PIDA to promote its Solar Valley project in Limburg Province. The Limburg Development & Investment Company's (LIOF) aims to create an attractive investment climate for sustainable energy in Limburg. LIOF is looking at solar energy in particular: the recent Photovoltaic Conference in Valencia, Spain, once again proved the remarkable growth of this sector worldwide.

LIOF not only stimulates and attracts new initiatives, it also provides financing. Its goal is that by the year 2013 employment in this sector should number 2.500, with a capital investment by the various companies of over 1 billion Euro. The basic idea is to develop a cluster of solar energy activities in the southern part of Limburg province, next to the border with Germany.

The Netherlands, and Limburg in particular, are well positioned in the development and commercialization of solar energy. The location near the German and Belgian border allows close cooperation with partners across the border. In addition, following the German example, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs has recently launched an incentive program for photovoltaic power generation for the Dutch consumer market.
