Green products from CMO and AUO in
FPD International 2008 |
| |
Following the theme of this year's FPD International in Yokohama-green and ambient, both CMO and AUO showcased products that are energy-saving and environment- friendly.
Milli-Power is one of most important breakthrough technology that CMO unveiled in the exhibition. By minimizing average power consumption less than a watt, Milli-Power saves up to 80% power from LED backlit panels. CMO's new 42" and 47" LCD TV panels are designed in less number of lamps but to increase power performance to 40~50%. By reducing the numbers of driving parts and integrating the assembly, this product features CMO's 3S concept-power saving, material saving, and timesaving.
On the other hand, by applying CABC (Content Adaptive Backlight Control), AUO's 10.1" WVGA green panels can automatically adjust the backlight according to the lighting condition around the users, and thus help to save the backlight power by 50%. AUO also showcased the 46" "Eco Plus" Full HD green TV panels that reduce weight, thickness, and power by 30% respectively. According to AUO's Green Logistic, the reduction of size and weight improves the transportation efficiency and consequently decreases the impact on the environment.

| ITRI's AC LED won the R&D 100 Award |
| |
Dedicated to the related research for four years, Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) won the 46th Annual R&D 100 Award with the On-Chip AC LED lighting technology. While ordinary 100 volt AC power must be converted to DC with a lower voltage for LED usage, the alternate current light emitting diode-ACLED-has a luminous efficacy of 50 lm/W and does not need an AC-DC converter, and therefore saves 15 to 30 percent of energy consumption that is lost during the conversion.
Tim Studt, the chairman of R&D 100 Award, believes that the development of ACLED technology will bring the world a remarkable change and advancement.
The ACLED technology will surely enhance the convenience of using LED lighting source and create more possibilities for LED applications.
R&D 100 Award was established by the editors of R&D Magazine in 1963 in order to select the 100 most technically innovative products each year and to promote the success of products in the market place. Wining products over the years have great influence upon people's life. Few examples would be the fax machine in 1975, the LCD in 1980, lab on a chip in 1996, and HDTV in 1998.

PIDA Announces Show Place & Time Change |
| |
In order to meet exhibitors' demands and better serve the photonics industry, OPTO Taiwan 2009 / LED Lighting Taiwan 2009 / Optics Taiwan 2009 / SOLAR Taiwan 2009" will be hosted at Taipei World Trade Center Exhibition Hall 1 (same place as in 2008) instead of Nangang Exhibition Center; and the exhibit time is advanced to June 10 (Wed.) ~ 12 (Fri.), 2009 instead of June 11 ~ 13, 2009. The organizer guarantees not only to satisfy exhibitors' requirements, but also to ensure high quality service than ever.
According to PIDA, Photonics Festival in Taiwan 2009 (OPTO Taiwan, LED Lighting Taiwan, Optics Taiwan, SOLAR Taiwan) not only shows the strong performance of the Taiwan photonics industry, but also provides an ideal promotion platform for global companies. In recent months, PIDA has gained great supports from local and overseas exhibitors. Meanwhile, many valuable comments are received from exhibitors suggesting to hold 2009 show at Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) Exhibition Hall 1, which is the same place as in 2008. Therefore, after serious consideration/discussion and supports from majority of exhibitors, the organizer decided to make the show place & time change.
Also to exhibitors' benefit, concurrent exposition "Display Taiwan 2009" will be taking place at the same exhibition hall and same time together with "Photonics Festival in Taiwan 2009."

PIDA holds conference on LED lighting technology
on 11/27 |
| |
With the growth of the LED industry in Taiwan, institutes and companies put a massive research effort in LED lighting technology. However, there are two major problems that remain unsolved regarding LED lighting. First, the high power LED illumination results in the problem of heat dissipation. Heat accompanied by higher power will lower down the efficiency of LED devices and decrease their reliability.
The optic design is the other technological challenge LED lighting has to face. How to improve the design of light shape and eliminate the glare are still the main concerns in LED light technology.
Due to the increasing application of LED lighting, PIDA will hold the conference on the key technology of LED lighting on 11/27. To register the conference, please contact Ms. Huang / Ms. Yang, Tel: +886-2-23514026 #813, 810, or check the website : http://www.pida.org.tw/seminar/WelcomeEnter.asp
