Taiwan LED Alliance Addresses Lighting Standards

LED standards contribute one of the key factors for Taiwan LED lighting products to be competitive on the international stage. Hence, on the regulation front, a group of Taiwan LED manufacturers , which includes Optotek, China Electric Manufacturing, Epistar, I-Chiun Precision Industry, Lite-On Technology, Lustrous Technology and Wei Min Industrial, has teamed up to establish the "LED Light Standard and Quality R&D Alliance". The alliance plans to develop LED T-bar indoor lamps with 100 lm/W light efficiency and 20,000-hour expected lifetime, LED headlights and LED street lamps, along with quality testing and verification technologies.

For the first stage, this alliance is going to integrate LED lighting industry and the technology industry and to develop the first comprehensive set of LED lighting measurement standards. Presently, the alliance has published, under the guidance of Department of Industrial Technology of MOEA, the drafts of "Fixtures of roadway lighting with light emitting diode lamps", "Normal aging test for light emitting diode component and module", "Measurement of thermal resistance for light emitting diode", "Measurement of optical and electrical for light emitting diode component", "Measurement of optical and electrical for light emitting diode module", and "LED modules for general lighting - Safety specifications" for solicitation of comments for drafts of national standards.

In view of the hot applications of LED lighting in recent years, with the support of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, the LED Light Standard and Quality R&D Alliance will combine the institute's standard-setting experience, the development of domestic LED lighting standards and regulations. In the future, the establish standards will enable domestic LED epi-wafer, packaging and lighting and other technical standards to help manufacturers provide products with top quality. In recent years, other countries such as China, Russia and Korea and other countries also have inputs on the standards related to LED; therefore, it is vital for the LED Light Standard and Quality R&D Alliance to promote and to build Taiwan's first complete set of LED lighting standard so as to rapidly improve Taiwan's LED industry's international competitiveness.

Seminar on Future Trends and Technology Outlook of Taiwan Photonics Industry

Influenced by the global economic depression, the growth of photonic industry falls short of expectation in 2008. How to foresee the industrial development in this chaos becomes the foremost issue for everyone in the area of photonics. PIDA hosted a three-day seminar starting from February 17, 2009 to provide the latest information and the most current development in photonic industry. In the 3-day-run seminar, PIDA's industrial analysts, guest speakers, and experts from industries will address on the hottest topics in the current LED, solar and FPD industry.

Australian MPs Visit PIDA to Hear the Latest Information in Photonic Industry

Australian MPs Visited PIDA on Feburary 11th for further understanding in Taiwan's photonic industry. The government of Victoria has been highly interested in Taiwan's accomplishment in the area of biotechnology, medical treatment and health, as well as photonic industry. The purpose of this visit is to see how Taiwanese Governement cooperates with players of photonic industry and exchange both countries' experience in R&D and manufacturering in the related areas.

The crew includes Luke Donnellan, the Co-Chairman of Victoria/ Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group, Martin Foley, elected MLA for Albert Park, and Wade Noonan, member of Legislative Assembly, Parliamentary of Victoria. In their visit to PIDA, Mr. Donnellan heard the current development of Taiwan's FPD, LED, and solar industry, and exchanged his opinions on how governments' policy would influence photonic industry.
