Taiwan Government Supports "Green Photonics"

With the increasing environmental consciousness worldwide, photonics industry has also aimed to be less harmful to our environment. "Green Photonics"ˇX a concept features photonic products or technologies that are energy-saving and pollution-freeˇX has become a hot topic in the related field. Taiwan's government also has certain policies to support photonic industry's dedication to a sustainable future, especially in the solar and LED industries.

"PV Demonstration System Subsidization" is a measure by the Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affair, to offer subsidy of 50% application fee (up to NT 150 thousand dollars per kWp) to encourage the public to apply PV systems. On the other hand, Taiwan government teamed up with players of LED industry to create national standard for LED lighting to accelerate the industrial development. The government also set up three demonstration areas last December, which includes 228 Memorial Park, Fuzhou Street, and Nanyiang Street, in order to showcase the effort of the LED industry.

According to estimation, products of green photonic would occupy around 53% of the total revenue of photonic industry in 2020, and will definitely become one of the most potential fields in the photonic industry.

TIPO Unveils its "Triple E Plan"

Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO) has recently unveiled the "Triple E Plan", a new policy focus for 2009 aiming to promote the three "E" s of Examination, Excellence, and Enforcement.

Each year, TIPO receives an average of 80,000 new patent applications and 60,000 new trademark applications. The increased importance put on patent and trademark applications, examinations and rights protection by industry reflect industry's growing dependence on patent implementation as a vital tool for market competition.

The challenges facing TIPO today are numerous and wide-ranging. The numbers of patent examiners must be replenished, as personnel shortages at TIPO in recent years have had a negative effect on examination efficiency, prolonging waiting periods for obtaining patent rights and stunting the development of industry. Comprehensive amendments to the Patent, Trademark, and Copyright Acts must be drafted and promoted by listening to the needs of industry. TIPO's new Triple E Plan represents a list of concrete plans and measures to meet these challenges and improve the landscape of IP protection in Taiwan, stimulating innovation and increasing Taiwan's competitiveness abroad.

Therefore, to build a solid network of patent professionals has become an important issue for TIPO and companies to protect intellectual property rights. In view of this, PIDA cooperates with TIPO-funded Taiwan Intellectual Property Training Academy (TIPA) and offers a series of sessions since March.

The basic session includes topics of patent law, patent applications, patent examination system, patent invalidation, etc., beginning from March 12 to 21. PIDA also offers two advanced sessions designed for those who pursue further training. Session 2 comprises international patent classification, patent application strategies, case studies in photonic industry, while session three focuses on patent specification, including patent circumvention, utility model patent application, and etc.

These sessions are half subsidized by TIPO. Participants would also have a chance to receive a certificate acknowledged by TIPA according to the attendance rate (80%) and test score (70 and up).   PIDA's Reception Party Offers the Latest Photonics News

PIDA will host a reception party on April 24th, 2009 to provide its members with the latest information and the most current development in photonics industry.

Influenced by the global economic depression, the growth of photonics industry falls short of expectation in 2008. How to foresee the industrial development in this chaos becomes the foremost issue for everyone in this field. In the reception party, three of PIDA's industrial analysts will share their opinions on the topics as follow:

1.PV Market Forecast in 2009 Q1
2.Seeing the Trend and Development in FPD Industry from Finetech
3.Analysis on Taiwan LED Industrial Development
