LED Backlight Applications to Continue Growth

According to PIDA's LED analyst, revenue of Taiwan LED epitaxy wafer and chip industry amounted to NTD 33.5 billions in 2009. In consequence of the global downturn at the end of 2008, the revenue of the industry had an over 30% decline in the first two quarters in 2009. The revenue, however, boosts in the second half of the year due to demands from medium- to large-sized LED backlight panels. Overall, Taiwan LED epitaxy wafer and chip revenue has a negative growth of 3% in comparison with 2008. On the other hand, revenue from Taiwan LED packagers reaches NTD 53.3 billions in 2009, a 2% growth comparing with 2008. In 2010, it is estimated that large-sized LED backlight would take the lead to push forward the demand.

Regarding LED market, applications in cell phones, consumer products, signals, displays, automotive, and lighting total to over USD 4.8 billion in 2009. In 2010, PIDA predicts LED backlight application will soon expands in 2010 from cell phone backlight to large-sized LCD backlight. This would lead to a great consumption of LEDs, and consequently capacity expansion among LED players worldwide.

LED Lighting Taiwan 2010: A Greener Taiwan

According to PIDA's statistics, benefited by strong global demands and government policies, the total revenue of Taiwan LED industry (epi, wafer, and packaging) reached 2,733 million USD in 2009 with a 19% growth. It is expected the trend will continue in 2010, with 2010 LED chip production value of Taiwan LED industry breaking 1,068 million USD and packaging production value rising to 1,665 million USD. In comparison, the 2010 global LED chip market value will reach 3,200M USD; while packaging market value is likely to climb to 8,230M USD.

Taiwan, being the most powerful LED manufacturing engine in the world, is well known for its integrated and comprehensive LED industry supply chain. In order to reflect the trend and the bright performance of Taiwanˇ¦s LED industry, LED Lighting Taiwan 2010, scheduled to held from June 9th to 11th 2010, not only brings you the most updated developments and features of Taiwanˇ¦s LED industry, but also it will show you the synergy between local and global LED manufacturers, and how this synergy can help you create your business opportunities.

This year, the show organizer PIDA has launched a global marketing initiative to boost the visibility of this exposition. PIDA is going to arrange official visiting activities, such as cooperating with Science Parks, meeting with international delegates from Germany, UK and Republic of Ireland , and organizations such OITDA, JLEDS to enhance the cooperation between local and global LED industry. PIDA also cooperates with overseas Taiwan trade offices/foreign trade offices to market the green image of LED Lighting Taiwan. Besides, international presses such as Dempa News, JEI, Electronics Journal, Laser Focus World from Japan, LEDs MAGAZINE, Optronics, Architectural SSL, LED PROFESSIONAL, Nature Photonic, Photonics Spectra, Opto Laser Europe form Europe/US will help to give more exposure to the show.

PIDA Held Press Conference to Provide 2010 Forecast

PIDA held a press conference "Green Future of Photonics" on January 13th to share its recent observation and research results on photonic industry. According to PIDA, revenue of global photonic industry fell from USD 420.9 billions in 2008 to USD 321.9 billions, a 24% decline that breaks the record. The market of photonic industry is forecasted to grow 16% in 2010.

Taiwan photonic industry, on the other hand, amounted to NTD 1,724.7 billion (revenue) with a negative growth rate at 13% in 2009. However, certain photonic products still remain growing in such a critical environment, including photovoltaic systems, LED lighting, LED package, E-paper, digital camera, optical disc drives, optical communication equipments, and LD laser light source.

Murphy Lin, Director of Industry and Technology Research Division of PIDA, pointed out that Taiwanˇ¦s photonic products take a 16% share in global photonic market, and estimates that Taiwan photonic industry would represent a revenue recovery in 2010 back to 2 trillion again.
