Korean companies still accounted for 90% of the OLED market

According to the IHS survey, the global small and medium size OLED panel shipments exceeded 100 million from July to September in 2016. South Korea Samsung Display (SDC) shipped nearly 100 million, accounting for more than 90%; and for the first time, Chinese companies shipped more than 1 million, mainly by Tianma, Everdisplay Optronics and Kunshan GVO.

Korean Samsung used OLED in smart phones at the early stage. Since 2010, Samsung "Galaxy S" series of mobile phones started to be equipped with self -made panels and accumulated 7 years of market experience. Apple finally considered the launching of I phones with OLED panel in 2017, setting off a global OLED panel boom. At present Samsung is the only company can supply large quantities of small and medium size OLED panel globally, almost monopolized the market.

In the meanwhile, Samsung Display are expanding the production investment for about 8 trillion won (about USD $ 6.5 billion) in response to the upcoming orders. In addition to continuing to enhance the production of A3 line Yashan factory, according to OLED material factory US UDC, A3 line is estimated to produce up to 120,000 pieces every month in 2017. And L7 line, Tangjing factory, which produces LED TV panel in jointly established plant with Sony, moved away the liquid crystal production equipment and saved space for the 6th generation OLED production line equipment for mass production. This expansion is expected to supply 200 to 300 million smart phone panels, further widened the gap with other suppliers. Samsung OLED panel production is not limited to supply for its own mobile phones, in addition to Apple, but also supplies to Huawei, VIVO and so on.

The LED components industry of China outdid the rest of the world

In 2016, the output value of LED components industry of the world reached US$ 17 billion, a decline of 2% as compared to that of 2015. In terms of the output value of LED components industry, China exhibited a big growth of 18% and Europe showed a growth of 7%; however, both Japan and Korea had a double-digit decline; Taiwan exhibited a slight decline of 2% after some adjustments of production capacity, some increases in the production of four-dimensional and niche products and decreases in the output of price-slashing blue-ray products.

As illustrated in Fig. 1, in 2016, the output value of LED components industry (including epi-wafers, chips, packages and modules) of the world reached US$ 17 billion, a decline of 2% as compared to that of 2015. Europe showed a growth of 7%, with the US a decline of 13%, Korea a decline of 13%, Japan a decline of 12%, Taiwan a decline of 2%.

In recent years, China¡¦s policy is to support the development of its LED components industry, successfully rendering it one of the biggest ten LED components manufacturing countries of the world. China, via cross-border mergers and acquisitions, has upgraded its technologies and increased its market share. In addition, the fact that China has acquired a globally important status in the fields of lighting applications and LCD panels has increased the importance of its LED components industry, enabling China to be the only country in the world to exhibit a big growth even though the global demand dwindled, rendering it, earlier than expected, the top county in the world in terms of the output value of LED components in 2017.

EVERLIGHT Opens Automotive Factory in Taiwan

EVERLIGHT Electronics Co., Ltd., a leading player in the global LED and optoelectronics industry, is dedicated to R&D of automotive LED products and providing a comprehensive portfolio of automotive products for its either interior or exterior applications. In order to meet the demand for the highest quality and the strongly growing production capacity toward automotive products, the establishment of Miaoli Tongluo New Factory has been commenced since 2015; investment over 300 million US dollars of capital was made to construct a smart ergonomic factory for the production of automotive elements. EVERLIGHT will aggressively spare no effort to enter the automotive market.

EVERLIGHT started to diversify/expand/extend its automotive activities in 2014. Today, the company owns a comprehensive portfolio of automotive products for all interior/exterior vehicle applications. All products are sulfur-resistant and passed the corrosive gases test for H2S, SO2, CL2 and NO2, etc. Thus the reservations/caveats against LED products which failed the sulfur-resistance test, in terms of brightness, color coordinates, voltage and function failure, etc., can be effectively reduced.
