Smart Car Photonics Expo Showing A Success


The three-day Photonics Festival in Taiwan event ended on June 16 with a total of more than 19,000 participants in three days for exhibitions and seminars. Nearly 1,000 foreign buyers came to visit the exhibition or join the buyers meeting to effectively enhancing the exposure of the photonics industry and assisting the development of the photonics industry.

According to the statistics of Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA), in 2016, the output value of the photonics industry of Taiwan reached NT$ 2 trillion, which comprised 8% of that of the world. The photonics industry of Taiwan has been undergoing structural changes via innovations in technologies, applications and business operating mode as well as via the development in the emerging photonics fields. The photonics industry of Taiwan continues to advance and excel in Internet of things, smart electric cars, health care, green energy applications, smart agricultural applications, national defense, security and various niche markets.

Photonics Festival in Taiwan gathered well-known society, associations, and industry alliances together to promote Taiwan photonics industry. Taiwan Vice President Chen congratulated this annual event and praised the joint effort of photonics and car industry, which symbolizes the convergence of industry power and high tech innovative applications. Dr. Peter T.C. Shih, chairman of Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA), said that the 21st century is the era of light, in constructing enhance Taiwan's cross-century competitiveness, photonics technology plays a crucial role. Photonics is not all about photovoltaic green energy applications, but also related to fashion, lifestyle and high-tech products.


IoV related issues will spur next-stage growth of photonics industry


IoV, currently the hottest issue, is actually a sub-issues of various sub-fields of Internet of Things.

However, for IoV to be completed and comprehensive, the integration of various related technologies is necessary, which include: autonomous drive, vehicle to X (V2X), advanced driving assistance system (ADAS), Head Up Display (HUD), Augmented Reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR).

According to the definition by NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Association), autonomous drive can be divided into five stages: Level 0, no autonomous drive at all; Level 1, autonomous drive with specific functions; Level 2, autonomous drive with inclusive functions; Level 3, autonomous drive with limited functions; Level 4, full autonomous drive.

ADAS is introduced during the initial Level 1 and Level 2 phases while autonomous drive will be implemented during the advanced Level 3 and Level 4 phases. Current cars are roughly on the Level 1 or Level 2 stages due to the limits in technology. It is estimated that it will take more time for more testing and improvement to achieve a higher level and real autonomous drive.

Lextar Electronics Released Iris and Facial Double Biometric IR LED Module


Lextar Electronics Corp released the PR88 IR LED packaging module that is used for iris and facial biometric functions, making it one of a few IR LED modules in the industry with double biometric functions. In addition, it also simultaneously released two IR LED modules with different beam angles that can be widely applied on security systems, access control systems, mobile phones, notebook PCs and other. By releasing various IR LED products at the same time, Lextar Electronics is formally entering the market of smart senor applications.

In recent years, handheld devices were gradually equipped with identification recognition systems to achieve more convenient unlocking and mobile payment functions, while simultaneously taking care of the productˇ¦s lightness, slimness and user safety. This caused the rise of biometric sensor components. Lextarˇ¦s newly released iris and facial double biometric IR LED is capable of achieving double identification recognition functions with just one module, thus strengthening user security. In addition to its 1.4mm ultra-slim design, it further saves the design space for terminal applications. Moreover, Lextar also released two IR packages with different beam angles: the one with a smaller beam angle can be used for iris recognition, while the other one with a larger beam angle can be used for facial recognition. Its product series have all passed the IEC 62471 highest level of human eye security exemption tests, while its algorithm and software were verified by various well-known brands. These product series of Lextar have already been introduced on mobile phones and access control systems, and can be applied on the sensorial devices of sensing equipment, robots, notebook PCs and other applications in the future.
