ODF Comes to Taiwan
for
the First Time |

The 6th International Conference on Optics-photonics Design and Fabrication - “ODF '08, Taipei” - will be held from June 9 to 11, 2008 in Taipei, Taiwan. Optics-photonics design and fabrication will continue to play a significantlyimportant role in the 21st. century - achieving harmony between technology and the environment.
Dr. C.C. Lee, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Optics and Photonics at the National Central University in Taiwan, Fellow of The International Society for Optical Engineering and Fellow of The Optical Society of America is the Co-General Chair of ODF '08. “After ODF '06, we were in contact with our friends in Japan and discussed the possibility of co-chairing the event and hosting ODF '08 in Taiwan. On June 15, this year, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed and it was official - ODF '08 would be staged in Taiwan.” Dr. Lee conveyed.
Dr. Lee continued: “ODF '08 is an international forum for engineers and scientists in the field of Optics-photonics Design and Fabrication to exchange their ideas and achievements for future mutual progress. ODF '08 will be held adjacent to OPTO Taiwan 2008, the biggest optics and photonics industrial exposition which is organized by PIDA in Taiwan. The conference will consist of sessions for optics-photonics design, simulation, optical components, optical systems and optical technology. These sessions will cover the field of optical theory, fabrication and testing, software, DOE's, micro-optics, nano-optics, photonic crystals, thin films, waveguides, MEMS, lasers, fiber communications, information optics, optical storage, optical lithography, microscopy, displays, bio-science and others.”

| PIDA at the International
Optoelectronics Associations (IOA) Meeting. |
| |
The IOA is a voluntary, information coalition of international optoelectronics associations.
Members have corporate membership of optoelectronics industry, they are national organizations, they represent the voice of industry to national governments, collect optoelectronics market information and generate optoelectronics technology roadmaps. Membership in the IOA is by invitation only and the first meeting was held in 1996.
This year the IOA meeting was held in Munich, Germany from June 20 to 22. Founder of PIDA, Dr. Peter Shih, was in attendance as usual to report about Taiwan's optoelectronics industry. Recently, PIDA Post asked Dr. Shih about his visit to Germany and PIDA's participation in the IOA. “Actually, PIDA was one of the four founding members of the IOA twelve years ago.” Dr. Shih explained.
Dr. Shih went on to say that this year's meeting was quite successful and when asked about good news from Taiwan, he said: “I was proud to be able to report to the IOA the amazing growth rate of the Taiwanese solar cell industry. Investment is up by a whopping 500% and within the next year, around twenty new production facilities plan to open to manufacture both solar cells and solar modules. When completed, Taiwan's output will reach 1.5 GW.” This year's IOA meeting also included a tour of the Siemens' museum.

Solar Taiwan Exposition |

For innovation in the green energy sector, Taiwan is taking bold steps to increase its share of the global market, especially in the solar power technology. Taiwan was ranked fifth in the world in 2007 in terms of production volume of 565 MW in photovoltaic (PV) industry and the production value reached US$ 1.79 billion, occupying a global market share of 16.2%. In 2008, the production volume is expected to increase by 93.8%, according to the prediction of the Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA).
In order to enhance the development of the PV industry and governmental policies, Solar Taiwan 2007, the first international solar exposition in Taiwan was successfully held in June, 2007. It was staged during the Photonics Festival in Taiwan 2007 at the Taipei World Trade Center along with sixteen domestic solar-energy-related enterprises, including the leading companies and organizations such as: E-ton Solar Tech, Motech, National Taiwan University and ITRI.
Solar Taiwan 2008 will be proudly to be inaugurated during June 11th -13th , 2008 at the TWTC Hall 1. Twenty-four booths have been sold so far and 11 solar-related exhibitors have registered, including companies such as: Tinsolar, Sinonar Solar as well as Ulvac from Japan who have booked a 6-booth area. The total area for Solar Taiwan 2008 is expected to be more the three times that of 2007. Depending on space, there are plans to display PV and LED integrated applications as well as PV applications for textiles - clothing that can generate electricity for powering portable devices. |
