Taiwan photonics industry exceeded USD 63.3 billion in 2007

Boosted by the growth of TFT LCD industry, Taiwan photonics industry's total production value continues its expanding trend. Being better than the original prediction, Taiwan photonics industry total production value in 2007 reached USD 63.3 billion, which increased by 31% compared with USD 48 billion of 2006, and went far beyond than expectation, according to the statistics from Photonics Industry and Technology Development Association (PIDA). PIDA forecasts that the annual growth rate will persist at least 17% in the next few years and it is very likely to break USD 90 billion in 2011. Taiwan photonics industry has accounted for 17% in the global market, which showed a 2% growth compared with that of 2006.

Taiwan TFT LCD industry has become the world largest, both in terms of production value and shipment with a 41% market share in the world. The production value has reached USD 34 billion by the end of 2007, with a growth rate of43% compared with that of 2006, higher than the USD 34.51 billion expected for Korea and USD 22.548 billion for Japan. The main reason is because of the shortage of the panel supply, which made the panel price rise significantly and increased the profit. The production value of flat panel display related industry (include materials & components) has accounted for USD 48.2 billion, with an amazing growth rate of 35% compared with 2006.

Aside from a strong flat panel display industry, LED and PV industry are also emerging as two stars industries in optoelectronics. Taiwan's LED packaging production value accounts for 20% of the global market share, ranking No.2 in the world. In 2007, the production value reached USD 1,545 billion. Meanwhile, the production value of photovoltaic has an enormous jump in 2007, reaching USD 1.78 billion in 2007, and expected to break USD 3.24 billion in 2008. Taiwan PV industry took 14.5% of the global market in 2007, which is the fourth largest in the world.

Besides, Taiwan's CIS module, scanner, digital still camera OEM, digital video camera, optics disk drive, DVD-R and VCD-R disk all rank top 3 in the world.

Dr. Peter Shih honored as new SPIE Fellow

Dr. Peter Shih, the founder of PIDA, has been elected to the grade of Fellow of SPIE in January, 2008 due to his significant achievement in Taiwan photonics industry. Dr. Shih plays an important role in Taiwan's photonics industry. In 1984, Dr. Shih was appointed by Executive Yuan, as the Executive Director of Electro-optics Science & Technology Committee, National Science Council (EOC). During his tenure, he had accomplished the EOC's missions by coordinating six departments to implement the 8 years program of Electro-optic Technology and Industry Development (1986-1994) and additional 4 years program (1996-1999).

The program also created two organizations, ITRI's Optoelectronic Institute and PIDA, both geared up the development of optoelectronic industry in Taiwan. Dr. Shih devotes himself to develop photonics industry in Taiwan by transferring overseas technologies and talents to local industry, building up links among international organizations, and creating international investment and cooperation opportunities as well as holding the prominent international seminars and expositions in Taiwan.

Each year, SPIE promotes members as new Fellows of the Society. Fellows are Members of distinction who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging. They are honored for their technical achievement, for their service to the general optics community, and to SPIE in particular.

The annual recognition of Fellows provides an opportunity to acknowledge outstanding Members for their service to the general optics and photonics community.

Seminar: Future Trends and Technology Outlook of Taiwan Photonics Industry in 2008

PIDA provides the photonics community with top quality technical programs ranging from manufacturing issues, technological innovation, and industry trends. The PIDA-hosted and National Science Council-supported Future Trends and Technology Outlook of Taiwan Photonics Industry in 2008 seminar will be held during Jan.15-18, 2007 at PIDA, Taipei. PIDA industry analysts, senior managers from the industry and scholars will pinpoint the future development both in market and technology trends during this seminar. The 3-day seminar covers the hottest fields such as the Precise Optics, FPD, LED and PV. Topics include materials & equipment, manufacturing process, laser scanning projection, touch panel, e-paper, LED street lamp, building integrated Photovoltaic applications.
