Chi Mei EL Corporation (CMEL), the subsidiary of Chi Mei Optoelectronics, has announced that it will invest NT$1 billion in building-up its second AMOLED production line. It is expected to start mass production in the third quarter of 2008 with a monthly capacity of over 7,000 units. Currently, the monthly capacity of CMEL's gen 3.5 plant is around 3,500 units.
Meanwhile, CMEL is expanding to the medium size panel segment and is scheduled to start mass production of 4.3 inch panels in the second quarter, targeting GPS and PMP applications. Also on line are 5-inch and 7.6-inch panels, aimed at navigators, portable TVs and digital photo frame applications.
PIDA analyst, Han Chung, pointed to the fact that branded cell phone makers, such as Nokia & Saumsung, have launched a few models embedded with AMOLED to test the water. CMEL's move indicates that the company is preparing for a boom market.
